Christmas from Scratch: Record Bowls

The only thing better than being frugal and green, is being frugal, green, and on trend.  These little buggers are all of the above.

What you need:
A cookie Sheet (you should probably line it with foil if you really love it, but i didn't have any issues)
An assortment of mixing bowls and pie plates
Record(s) that you have no problem mangling...aka: not collectibles

Process:

  1. Preheat your oven to 200 or 250 degrees
  2. Place a smaller mixing bowl or pie plate upside down on cookie sheet and center record on top of bowl.  Choose a similarly shaped bowl that is big enough to leave a decent gap between.  If using a set of 3 mixing bowls, i'd probably put the smallest one on the cookie sheet and pair it with the biggest bowl and not use the middle one.
  3. Put the piled high cookie sheet in the oven for 2 or 3 minutes, or until the record becomes nice and floppy.
  4. Immediately put the larger bowl over the record (or you can shape it with your oven mits if you like).  The record will cool quickly.  If you don't like it, you can always rebake it after it cools.

  1. WHAT! A parakeet training record? That's awesome. Nice use of relics from the past.

  2. Yeah, that one has been in my parents sad record collection for years. My mom swore she didn't have one when I went looking for it the other day, but there it was. Funny thing is they've never had a parakeet.

  3. I love record crafts. Just posted about a record bowl covered in jute rope over on Blogher DIY. Nice way to spice them up. My mom used to make them into purses!
